Irpex lacteus (Fr. ex Fr.) Fr. Fruit body annual; no stem; resupinate and overlapping or laterally fused, with the edges curling up from the elongated, spreading, crust-like mass; up to 7cm across, lcm wide, 0.5cm thick; upper surface white, cream, or pale buff; densely woolly or hairy. Tubes up to 3mm deep, continuous with the flesh; white to pale tan. Pores 2-3 per mm near the margin, angular; surface white to cream. Flesh up to 2mm thick, soft-fibrous; white to pale tan. Spores ellipsoid to cylindrical, smooth, 5-7 x 2-3µ. Deposit white. Cystidia conspicuous, long, encrusted; hyphal structure dimitic. Habitat on logs, stumps, branches, or trunks of dead hardwoods and occasionally on dead conifers. Common. Found widely distributed throughout North America except the Southwest. Season all year. Not edible. |
